Abbozzo Gallery is pleased to announce
our first solo exhibition of new paintings by the Burlington-based
artist Daniel Ross. Titled "Waiting for the Light", the show features
exciting new works which present familiar Canadian imagery - the
landscape - in abstract, unexpected and very personal ways. Landscape
is not the subject of these paintings - it is emotion. Ross uses the
often bleak beauty of the Canadian landscape as a metaphor for the
self, and as a conduit for emotion. In these paintings he often
combines figurative elements with abstract fields of colour, producing
charged emotional compressions which dramatically alter our
perceptions of what the landscape can represent. The solitary figures
who inhabit these landscapes (portraits of the artist and his wife,
Emma Quin) serve to embody a state of mind, a sense of displacement,
and a search for direction, which we can all relate to. The works in
this exhibition are all private meditations on identity and existence,
communicated with power and sensitivity.
Daniel Ross was born in Ottawa in 1966.
His decision to become a practicing professional artist came after
several years of University study. He was accepted into the Ontario
College of Art in 1989, graduating with honours from the department of
drawing and painting in 1993. He spent his third year studying abroad
at the O.C.A. studio in Florence, Italy, an unforgettable experience
which confirmed his personal direction as an artist. In the years
since he has developed a body of work which has attracted a wide
audience and increasing critical attention.
